Taken inside a building on Governors Island, the Army post in New York Harbor, this photograph records a mural whose room is only tentatively identified, since the title was devised by Library of Congress staff and carries a question mark. The picture was made on July 19, 1938, under the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration, a New Deal program that employed artists to decorate public buildings during the Depression. Its catalog record credits the photographer as Noble, and the muralist's name appears in the title as Tom Leftin Johnson, a spelling worth checking against other sources. The image is a useful record of how federal interiors of the period were decorated.
