Troops of the 7th Regiment, a New York militia unit, are shown marching across the grounds of Governors Island, the harbor island that served as a U.S. Army post for much of the 19th century before becoming a Coast Guard station and, later, a national monument. Regimental garden parties of this kind were social fundraisers and public showcases for the city's volunteer militia, which drew crowds of families and officers to the island's lawns. Governors Island sat in New York Harbor and was a familiar stage for these military gatherings, so the scene captures how closely the island's grounds were tied to the city's civic and military life.
