Taken from the upper floors of the Whitehall Building, this view looks south over the tip of Manhattan toward Battery Park and Governors Island, with the harbor spread out beyond. In about 1911, the park's waterfront was a busy edge of the city, where ferries, steamships, and harbor traffic met the land. Governors Island had been a military post since the colonial era and was home to Army garrisons and their facilities. Irving Underhill, the New York photographer who made and copyrighted the print, produced many views of the city's streets and waterfront, and this one shows how the island and the park sat within the wider harbor.
