Governors Island and The Narrows, the strait where New York Harbor opens between Brooklyn and Staten Island, appear together in this c1901 view. The record classes it as an aerial view, an elevated perspective still uncommon in the early 1900s that makes the island's layout and the shipping channel easy to follow. Irving Underhill, a New York photographer, made and copyrighted the print. The Army had held the island since the early 1800s, and its forts guarded the approaches to the city.
