This aerial view looks down on Staten Island from a balloon, a vantage that was still rare when the picture was made in early August 1906. The print was issued by P.F. Collier & Son, the New York publishing house behind *Collier's Weekly*, which used striking images like this to show readers their city from above. Staten Island, the southwesternmost of New York City's five boroughs, sits across the harbor from New Jersey and the lower reaches of Manhattan and Brooklyn. Balloon photography of this kind, made before airplanes were common, offers a useful record of the island's shoreline and settlement in the early twentieth century.
