The Montgolfier brothers' hot-air balloon was the first to carry people aloft, and this image shows that milestone in its earliest form. The balloon's first crewed flight took place in Paris in 1783, when the envelope lifted two men over the city before a crowd of onlookers. Prints like this one spread the news quickly across Europe, turning a daring experiment into a public spectacle. Look closely at the sky and rooftops for the scale of the vessel against the city, a sight that struck contemporaries as nearly unbelievable.
