A balloon drifts low over a line of trees, and its shadow stretches across the treetops below, the two shapes almost touching. Hot air ballooning took off in the 1780s, when the Montgolfier brothers in France showed that a envelope of heated air could lift people off the ground, and images like this one helped the public picture a sport that was still new and strange. Photographers were drawn to the moment when the sun sits low, because the light turns an ordinary flight into a study of scale and distance. The record gives no date or location, so the scene stands for the broader pleasure of watching a balloon pass over an everyday landscape.
