The name on this card, Balloon Godard, points to the Godard family of France, whose members made public balloon ascents for much of the nineteenth century. Trade cards like this one were typically handed out to promote a business, and balloon scenes were popular because a flight over a town was a crowd-drawing spectacle. Worth noticing is how the small image makes the balloon the centerpiece, with the town spread below as a decorative backdrop, a common way illustrators showed the novelty of ballooning to the public.
