This print gives a bird's-eye view of New York City taken from a balloon in early August 1906, when aerial photography was still a novelty and cameras had to be carried aloft by hot-air or gas balloons. It was issued by P.F. Collier & Son, the New York publishing house behind the popular weekly *Collier's*, which regularly used striking pictures to draw readers. The photograph was registered for copyright, so it was meant for wide circulation rather than as a private record. Before powered flight, pictures like this were among the few ways people could see the dense street grid and rooftops of the growing city from above.
