A guide's deadpan remark that New Yorkers spend their summers among the frost-covered towers gives this 1909 cartoon its punchline, as a dirigible crowded with sightseers drifts beside a skyscraper glazed in ice. A.B. Walker drew it for *Life*, the humor weekly, in its April 29, 1909 issue. The joke plays on two novelties of the age: the skyscraper, which was reshaping the New York skyline, and the airship, still a marvel that could carry tourists over the city. Its exaggerated winter scene shows how much the city's towers already amused and puzzled the public.
