This lithograph shows a dirigible airship flying the French tricolor, a detail that ties it to France's early work on steerable balloons. The record gives only the broad date "18--," but the style and subject point to the later decades of the 1800s, when French engineers led efforts to make airships controllable rather than simply drifting with the wind. Henri Giffard's steam-powered airship of 1852 and Charles Renard and Arthur Krebs's *La France* of 1884 were among the milestones that drew public attention. Prints like this one helped spread the excitement and national pride surrounding the new technology.
