Apollo, the Greek god of the arts, crowns the French physicist Jacques Alexandre César Charles with a wreath while cherubs and an angel gather around his balloon. Charles made the first hydrogen balloon flight in Paris in August 1783, and this 1788 engraving turns that feat into classical allegory, a sign of how quickly ballooning had become a public celebrity. The print was engraved by E.A. Tilly after a design credited to a draftsman whose name the record gives with a question mark, and it comes from the Tissandier collection.
