Jacques Charles, the French physicist, is named in this record as the figure at the center of a departure scene. On December 1, 1783, Charles and Nicolas-Louis Robert lifted off from the Tuileries Garden in Paris in a hydrogen-filled balloon, the first crewed hydrogen flight. The launch drew enormous crowds, and the flight landed about two hours later in the countryside northwest of the city. Images of the event were widely circulated in the months that followed, so the scene captures a moment that was already becoming a symbol of the new age of flight.
