Chavoutier's drawing details a valve for a balloon of 5,000 to 8,000 cubic meters, a size far larger than most hot-air or hydrogen craft of the period. Dated October 24, 1868, in Paris, the sheet is an engineering study, and it shows how crucial the valve was: pulling it released gas so the aeronaut could control descent and landing. The drawing is part of the Tissandier collection, assembled by Gaston Tissandier, a French aeronaut and writer who documented ballooning in the 1860s and 1870s.
