A design for a walled enclosure built to hold a balloon during inflation, the drawing is signed by J. Chavoutier, an architect with an address on rue Louis Le Grand in Paris. In the 1860s, filling a large gas balloon was a costly, delicate operation that needed shelter from wind and a fixed place to work, so a purpose-built yard like this one reflects how seriously French aeronauts were taking the logistics of flight. The sheet is in ink and watercolor and comes from the Tissandier collection, assembled by Gaston Tissandier, a balloonist and writer whose papers document the early years of ballooning in France.
