Rather than showing a balloon in flight, this patent drawing lays out a method for lowering and raising a balloon at will without losing gas or ballast. Dated November 1853 and datelined Villeneuve-Saint-Georges, a town in the Seine-et-Oise department south of Paris, it is rendered in ink and watercolor. Aeronauts of the 1850s typically changed altitude by venting gas or dropping sandbags, both costly and sometimes dangerous, so proposals like this one reflect a persistent effort to make flight controllable. The drawing belongs to the Tissandier collection, which preserves such inventions.
