A captive balloon called the "Château aérien," or "aerial castle," gives this poster its distinctive name, and its title promotes a Tobiansky system of watertight compartments. Printed in Brussels in 1894, it advertised the Antwerp Universal Exposition, where tethered balloons carried visitors on short rides above the grounds. Such balloons were a popular draw at world's fairs of the period. The color lithograph, with partial English and German titles beside the French, shows how Belgian exhibitions aimed for an international crowd.
