The setting is the Tuileries, the former royal garden in central Paris, where a tethered balloon of this kind rose on a steel cable while passengers looked down over the city. Engineer Henri Giffard built the captive balloon in the 1870s, and its steam-driven winch let it be raised and lowered with little effort. The 1878 Exposition Universelle drew crowds to see it, and such flights were among the most popular novelties of the fair. Look closely at the cable, the winch house, and the gondola to see how the machinery was meant to make ballooning a safe public spectacle.
