The picture shows Henry Giffard's great tethered balloon in the Tuileries Gardens in Paris, seen from above just before it rose. Giffard's captive balloon was one of the attractions of the 1878 Exposition Universelle, and the crowds and reviewing stands around it show how much public interest the spectacle drew. The sepia photoprint comes from a process associated with the photographer Dagron, and it belongs to the collection of Gaston Tissandier, an aeronaut and writer who documented balloon flight in that era.
