Photographed before its ascent in the Tuileries Gardens, this view shows a balloon at the start of a flight, the moment when the crowd and crew would have been most focused on it. The caption names the aeronaut as Henry Giffard, the French engineer known for his 1852 steam-powered airship and for tethered balloon flights that drew crowds to Paris during the 1878 Exposition Universelle. The print belongs to the Tissandier Collection, named for Gaston Tissandier, a balloonist and writer on aeronautics. The caption credits the photographer as "Dagran," probably a variant of Dagron, but the record is unverified.
