Here the balloon hangs above Paris, recording the flight that carried Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier and the Marquis François Laurent d'Arlandes on November 21, 1783, the first free human ascent. The Montgolfier brothers' hot-air balloon rose from the grounds of the Château de La Muette on the western edge of the city and stayed aloft for about 25 minutes before coming down on the outskirts. Engravings like this one spread news of the flight across Europe, letting people who never saw the launch picture a human passenger drifting over familiar rooftops.
