Most views of Paris from above in this period were made from tethered balloons, and this print stands out because it was taken from Henry Giffard's Grand Ballon Captif, the large captive balloon that carried passengers aloft during the 1878 Exposition Universelle. The sepia photoprint is credited to Dagron, and it comes from the Tissandier Collection, which is tied to the French aeronaut and writer Gaston Tissandier. Giffard's tethered ascents drew crowds, and photographs like this one let viewers see the city's boulevards and rooftops from a height few had experienced. The caption data is unverified, so the exact vantage point and date should be checked against other sources.
