Few attractions in Paris drew bigger crowds in 1878 than the captive balloon Henry Giffard built for the Exposition Universelle, which rose on a tether above the Tuileries Gardens. Giffard, an engineer who had built a steam-powered airship in 1852, is credited with the design, and this sepia print shows spectators gathered at a café near the launch site. The picture comes from the Tissandier Collection, named for the balloonist and writer Gaston Tissandier, and was made by the Dagron studio. The caption information is unverified, so the exact location of the café is worth checking against other sources.
