This photograph shows a captive balloon that Henry Giffard, the engineer known for his steam-powered airship of 1852, set up in the Tuileries Gardens in Paris in 1878. Tethered to the ground, the balloon let passengers rise above the city and look down on the gardens, a popular novelty during the years when the French capital was hosting large international exhibitions. The print comes from the Tissandier Collection, which holds material gathered by the aeronaut and writer Gaston Tissandier. The caption card that accompanies the record is unverified, so the date and location are best read as the catalogers' best information.
