Rather than showing the balloon, this broadside announces a paid ascent at Spalding, in Lincolnshire, on Thursday, October 14, 1841, by Mr. Gypson of the Royal Zoological Gardens in London. Billed as his forty-fifth and last ascent of the season, the event reflects how touring aeronauts drew crowds to provincial English towns in the 1840s. Printed by Thomas Albin, Junior, and backed by local magistrates and a committee of gentlemen, the notice shows civic leaders lending respectability to a popular spectacle. The sheet later passed into the collection of the French aeronaut Gaston Tissandier.
