This 1852 poster advertises a balloon ascent at Batty's on Thursday, July 1, with doors opening at 5 and the launch set for 6 o'clock precisely, a timing the printed bottom margin stresses. Such ascents were popular paid spectacles in mid-nineteenth-century London, when crowds gathered to watch gas-filled balloons rise from enclosed grounds. The combination of a woodcut image with dense letterpress text was a common, inexpensive way to draw attention to these events. The poster comes from the collection of Gaston Tissandier, the French aeronaut and writer on ballooning, and it preserves the promotional style of the period.
