Few events drew a small Pennsylvania town together like a balloon ascent, and this broadside announces one for Saturday, July 22, 1871, in Huntingdon. Beneath its color woodcut, the letterpress text promises a grand ascension by Professor Jno. A. Light, billed as a renowned aeronaut, who would rise from the borough in his "veteran balloon," the Flying Cloud. In the 1870s, such exhibitions were paid public spectacles run by traveling aeronauts and local committees, and posters like this one were displayed around town to build a crowd.
