Tethered high above the Virginia countryside near Gaines Mill, this scene shows Thaddeus Lowe's observation balloon during the Peninsula Campaign of 1862. Lowe, a professional aeronaut, led the Union Army's balloon corps, and his craft let officers watch Confederate positions and relay observations to the ground by telegraph. The print itself carries a c1910 copyright from the Patriot Publishing Company, so it appears to be a later reproduction of a Civil War-era view. It is a useful reminder that military aviation began decades before powered flight.
