Mrs. Orme Thornberry posed as the balloon girl at a Near East Relief benefit garden fete, a society entertainment held to raise money for the charity's work. Near East Relief was founded in 1919 to aid Armenians, Greeks, Assyrians and others displaced by war and violence in the former Ottoman lands, and Washington's social set often supported it through events like this one. The photograph comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that recorded the capital's society figures during the 1920s, and its balloons and costume show how such fundraisers blended charity with festive display.
