Few views of early 1900s Manhattan were taken from above, which makes this one unusual. The print was made by P.F. Collier & Son, the New York publishing house behind *Collier's Weekly* and its illustrated Pictorial America series, and it was registered for copyright under the number H81580. In the mid-1900s, cameras carried aloft by balloon were still a novelty, and such pictures let viewers see how the city's dense street grid, rivers, and crowded blocks fit together. The record gives only the date of August 3, 1906, so the exact vantage point and the flight are not documented here.
