From a balloon high above the streets, this c1912 photograph gives an unusual overhead view of Houston, a view few photographers of the period could capture. The print is credited to Little Frank's balloon and copyrighted by Beach & Stern. Aerial photography was still rare then, since cameras had to be carried aloft and exposures timed without the aid of modern equipment. Houston was growing quickly as a rail and shipping center on Buffalo Bayou, and the streets and rooftops in the picture show a city in the middle of that expansion.
