Guild's Lake in northwest Portland provides the setting for this stereograph, which shows a balloon ascent held during the 1905 Lewis & Clark Centennial Exposition. The fair marked the centennial of the Lewis and Clark expedition's arrival at the Pacific and drew crowds with spectacles like aerial flights. Stereograph cards such as this one were viewed through a special lens to create a sense of depth. The record credits the card to the International Stereograph Co., but its details are based on an old caption, so the exact flight and date are best treated as approximate.
