Taken from a balloon drifting above San Diego, this view offers a bird's-eye sweep of the city that few people of its era could have seen for themselves. Aerial photography of this kind grew out of late nineteenth-century experiments in carrying cameras aloft, which gave cities some of their first overhead records. Exposures had to be timed against wind and the balloon's drift, so each image was partly a matter of luck. Pictures like this are useful for studying street layouts, building footprints and open land, much of which changed quickly as the city grew.
