A captive balloon hovering over the city gives this view of San Francisco its unusual height, looking out across rooftops, streets and the bay from above the crowded blocks. Tethered balloons like this one were used in the late 1800s and early 1900s for aerial photography and sightseeing, and a panorama taken from one offered viewers a bird's-eye sweep that ground-level cameras could not match. Pictures of this kind are worth studying for the way they record the dense growth of the city, its hills and waterfront, before modern skyscrapers changed the skyline.
