Two children peer over the wicker rim of a hot air balloon basket in this card, a detail that sets it apart from the many balloon views on the Pictorial America board, which tend to show the craft alone against the sky. Ballooning was a popular spectacle in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when ascents drew large crowds to fairgrounds and public parks. Pictorial cards like this one were often printed as souvenirs, so the presence of children suggests the card was aimed at families who had seen such flights or hoped to. Its small size and printed format are typical of the period's mass-produced ephemera.
