A balloon hangs low over an open field, its canvas bulging above a line of rough wooden gate posts in the foreground. Ballooning in the United States was still a novelty for much of the nineteenth century, and early flights drew crowds to fairgrounds and open pastures much like this one. The contrast of the rural gate and the floating envelope is worth a second look: it shows how the balloon, which seemed almost magical to onlookers, was often launched from the same farmland that surrounded ordinary daily life.
