Two hot air balloons drift low over a river, their bright envelopes reflected in the water while cottonwood trees line the banks below. Ballooning in the United States grew out of nineteenth-century experiments with lighter-than-air flight, and by the twentieth century it had become a popular spectacle at fairs, meets and exhibitions. Scenes like this one, where a rising balloon meets open riverside country, captured the sense of leisure and wonder that surrounded early flight. Cottonwoods, common along western rivers, add a plain, natural counterpoint to the colorful machines above.
