Drifting low over a patchwork of turning fields, the balloons in this view are seen from above, a vantage that was hard to come by before aerial photography matured. Ballooning in the United States grew from the 1783 Montgolfier flights in France and became a popular spectacle at fairs and exhibitions through the nineteenth century, with the basket and envelope shapes of the period still recognizable here. Autumn light gives the scene its warm palette, and the high angle turns the landscape into a map of hedgerows and roads that would have been unfamiliar to most viewers at the time.
