A single balloon drifts low over hazy countryside as the light fades, its envelope glowing against a darkening sky. Pictures of ballooning from the late 1800s and early 1900s often captured these quiet, unhurried flights, when hot air and gas balloons were still novel enough to draw crowds at fairs and exhibitions. Views taken at dusk are less common than daytime scenes, because early photographic plates needed long exposures and good light. The soft, layered haze in this scene gives a sense of how far a balloonist could see from the air, and how slowly the landscape seemed to slip past below.
