Pale balloons drift above a valley in the first light of morning, their bright envelopes set against a cool, misty floor of land below. Ballooning in America grew from the late eighteenth century, when the Montgolfier brothers' hot-air flights in France inspired American crowds to watch and, later, to take to the sky themselves. Dawn was the traditional launch time because the air is typically calmer then, and photographers and painters were drawn to the way early light softens the scene and lifts the colors of the envelopes. The picture is worth noticing for that quiet moment before the day's wind picks up.
