Silhouetted balloons rising against a sunrise sky are a familiar sight at mass ascensions, when dozens of crews launch before dawn while the air is calm and the light is low. The early-morning hour is what gives this scene its character: the balloons appear as dark shapes with their envelopes outlined against a band of orange and pale gold. Hot air ballooning grew out of the eighteenth-century experiments of the Montgolfier brothers in France, and by the twentieth century it had become a popular sport and a regular feature of fairs and festivals across America. Sunrise launches remain the traditional choice because winds are typically gentlest then.
