Advertised for Thursday, July 1, 1852, this poster promised a balloon ascent at six o'clock precisely, with the doors opening at five. Its woodcut and letterpress layout shows how London showmen of the period sold spectacle to paying crowds, when a balloon rising from a public enclosure was a popular night out. The title credits a man named Earle, and the sheet survives in the Tissandier collection, assembled by the French aeronaut Gaston Tissandier, who gathered early flight ephemera. Note how firmly the timing is stated, a reminder that weather and gas supply could easily upset a scheduled ascent.
