Few handbills from the early balloon years name a place as plainly as this one: Daventry, a market town in Northamptonshire, England, is where Mr. Gypson advertised his ascent in a silk balloon. Ballooning reached Britain within a few years of the Montgolfier brothers' 1783 flights in France, and public ascents were often staged in market towns and open fields, with printed bills like this one drawing paying crowds. Varnished silk, lighter and more gas-tight than the linen of the first envelopes, became the preferred fabric for such showmen. The board files this sheet under France because the sport began there, not because this event took place in France.
