The title names the balloon *Nassau*, which the aeronaut Charles Green flew from Vauxhall Gardens, the London pleasure grounds famed for music, fireworks and evening fetes. In 1836 Green and two companions made a long-distance voyage from Vauxhall that ended in the German duchy of Nassau, several hundred miles away, a flight then regarded as remarkable. Such ascents were as much public entertainment as scientific feat, and the crowds, lights and music around the launch were part of the spectacle. The print records that festive setting as well as the balloon itself.
