Few early English balloon flights carried a naval officer, which sets this print apart: it shows James Sadler rising from the gardens of the Mermaid Tavern in Hackney with Captain Paget of the Royal Navy aboard. Sadler had made England's first balloon ascent in 1784 and became a well-known aeronaut. In the 1810s, ascents from open ground near London drew large crowds, and printmakers issued colored views like this one to commemorate them. The print is a useful record of how the public followed these flights.
