Few early balloon prints name the aeronaut as directly as this one does. It commemorates an ascent by Mr. Sadler, most likely James Sadler, the English chemist who made some of Britain's first balloon flights in the 1780s. Engravings like this one were sold to a public fascinated by flight, and by 1811 balloon ascents had become popular spectacles across Europe as well as scientific demonstrations.
