Few people were allowed to leave the ground in the early balloon era, so a print showing passengers crowded into the wicker basket of L'Union records a rare moment. Its subject is the French ballooning craze of the 1800s, when ascents drew large crowds and lithographs spread the images to readers who would never see a flight themselves. Printmakers of the period often reworked the scene from sketches or from accounts of the flight, so the basket, rigging, and passengers may show what the artist expected a voyage to look like as much as what it looked like on the day. Such prints are useful for seeing how the public imagined aerial travel.
