The title's Italian phrase "di Lione" points to Lyon, the French city that was a center of balloon ascents in the nineteenth century, and it marks this sheet as a portrait of a named aeronaut rather than a generic scene of flight. In this lithograph, Arban stands in the wicker basket, the figure of the pilot himself rather than the balloon alone. Lithographic portraits like this one were widely sold in the 1840s and 1850s, when public ascents drew large crowds and the press and printshops turned daring aeronauts into celebrities. Pay attention to the basket and rigging, which show how these early craft were actually handled.
