Two figures stand in the wicker basket beneath a billowing balloon, a detail that places the scene in the early years of crewed flight. France was the center of that work: the Montgolfier brothers launched the first hot air balloon carrying people from the Château de la Muette in Paris in November 1783, and the sight of ordinary observers rising above the city quickly became a popular subject for printmakers. Images like this one circulated widely, recording both the novelty of the machine and the public excitement it stirred. The printer's name, Champion, points to the commercial trade that turned these aerial events into affordable pictures for a broad audience.
