A striped balloon rises beneath a winged woman who seems to be carrying it skyward, a pairing that turns the new machine into an allegory of human ambition. Engravings of this kind date from the years after the Montgolfier brothers' hot-air balloon first carried people aloft in France in 1783, when the sight of a flying craft was still astonishing. Such images often cast aviation as glory or triumph, and the figure here follows that convention of personifying the achievement. Note how the striped envelope became a favorite motif of the period, recognizable even in small prints.
